Largest dog biscuit achieved in Joplin, Missouri!

Calling all dogs! On 8 July 2011, I travelled to Joplin, Missouri, to witness the attempt for the world’s largest dog biscuit.

Hampshire Pet Products decided to attempt this record to celebrate the company’s 10-year anniversary and they wanted to make sure it was a BIG one. The day started off with a ceremonial ribbon cutting, followed by a warm video message from celebrity chef, Rachael Ray, wishing the company good luck.


The attempt began with the verification of the scale used to weigh the biscuit.  Once it was verified, the tray the biscuit was baked on and the stand used to transport the biscuit were weighed.  This weight played an important role at the end of the attempt as it was subtracted from the total weight, which included the baked biscuit, to arrive at the weight of the biscuit.




Next, we were brought into the area where the biscuit ingredients were mixed and placed into the bone-shaped mold.  The ten bakers who participated in the attempt patted down the dough into the mold and then the biscuit was smoothed out to make it as flat as possible. Once the dough was in place, the mold was removed and the company’s logo was imprinted onto the biscuit before it was placed into the oven for baking.
 

The baking process took several hours and while everyone waited patiently for the biscuit to bake, attendees participated in a dog show where the cutest, ugliest, largest and smallest dogs were judged and awarded ribbons and a delicious BBQ lunch was served.


When the dog biscuit was ready, everyone gathered around the scale for the weigh in.  The final result? A dog biscuit that weighed a whopping 617 lbs (279.87 kg), which smashed the previous record of 231 lb 7 oz (105 kg) by more than double! The achievement was celebrated with a huge vanilla and chocolate dog biscuit-shaped cake (for human consumption only)!

What a great achievement for Hampshire Pet Products as well as an uplifting and positive event for the city of Joplin who are working hard to overcome the devastation of the tornado that hit their city on 22 May 2011.
